Send a letter for Future Generations

We have now learned with concern that the role of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Future Generations –and its associated constitutional guarantee of environmental rights –are currently under review as part of Hungary’s ongoing constitutional reform process.

Please join us in writing a letter to Mr Jozsef Szajer, Vice-Chairman of European Peoples’ Party (EPP) Group urging him to reflect on the loss of genuine global leadership that would result from any decision to weaken Hungary’s Constitutional provisions in relation to the right to a healthy environment and the Parliamentary Commissioner for Future Generations. UN declares water a fundamental human right

The recognition of water as a fundamental human right is fascinating to the CONVERGE project as we consider how we can progress towards Equity within biological planetary limits. According to this resolution 884m people have no access to safe drinking water and more than 2.6bn lack access to basic sanitation. With 122 nations in favour, none against and 41 abstentions, the UN has declared that access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right.

Book of the Month

In this Month's jaunt in the world of convergence related publications I came across "Economic Globalisation and Human Rights". As the CONVERGE project evolves we will come through our research towards knowing more about this hugely relevant subject, but for now, I content myself to have a read of this book and recommend it as book of the week for the CONVERGE project. Feel free to comment with your reviews and thoughts on this one!

"Economic globalisation is one of the guiding paradigms of the twenty-first century. The challenge it implies for human rights is fundamental, and key questions have up to now received no satisfying answers. How can human rights protect human dignity when economic globalisation has an adverse impact on local living conditions?

Globalisation, Convergence and the Case for Openness in Developing Countries

On a jaunt in the internet I came across the interesting paper from Mattias Lutz:

CSGR Working Paper no. 72/01, May 2001

Abstract:

This paper critically assesses the current policy consensus that greater integration into the world economy is beneficial for poor countries. It examines both the theoretical basis and recent empirical studies on the link between openness and economic performance.
