Last Summer before CONVERGE's official launch, Dr. Cletus Babu was interviewed for The Tablet. 2009 was the 25th Anniversary of Social Change and Development (SCAD) the organisation Cletus founded. In those 25 years SCAD has improved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in the poorest circumstances. CONVERGE would like to take this opportunity to talk about Cletus and SCAD and express our deep gratitude for having SCAD involved in the CONVERGE project. The interview is attached as a pdf.
In 1985 Dr. Cletus Babu founded SCAD (Social Change and Development) to help the underprivileged and downtrodden people of Tirunelveli & Tuticorin and to make a difference to the quality of life of the rural poor. With the support of two friends, he set out on a path to uplift the poor.
With limited funds and the belief that people should be empowered to create their own development, Cletus was innovative in creating ownership and independence amongst the people by, joining them together and encouraging them to support each other. Dr. Amali Cletus Babu joined Cletus as a life partner in the year 1988 and together they dedicated their life to the upliftment of socially disadvantaged people. The success of this work was evident. Improvements were visible in community cohesion, education and health.
SCAD initiated its work in five villages and now works with 454 villages in three regions operating a range of interventions such as rural education, community development, holistic health care, agricultural promotion, veterinary services, water management, environmental care, disaster management, emergency relief etc.
Over the past 24 years in those villages everyone has felt the benefit; from pregnant mothers and the very young to elders that are destitute in their closing years. Models of social development created by SCAD have been adopted by the Indian Government and shared all over the world.
SCAD is now a thriving NGO in Tamil Nadu, Southern India, and supports over 300,000 people in two districts to free themselves from a life of grinding poverty and debt to one of hope and opportunity. The centre at Cheranmahadevi is green and brimming with life and the SCAD Group of Institutions attracts 7000 on regular basis and young people from under privileged and humble backgrounds.
Having SCAD on the CONVERGE team is invaluable. How convergence can work in the developping world is the burning question on the lips of so many. We are extremely proud to work with this organisation in researching our transition towards a livable future for human society.
